Simon Pegg Would Like To Clarify His Comments About How Tom Cruise Never Apologizes

Simon Pegg and Tom Cruise first got friendly with each other while making 2006’s Mission: Impossible III, and Simon has been in every M:I movie since, and I guess their friendship is strong enough for The Times of London to title their interview with Simon, Simon Pegg: my addiction, midlife crisis – and Tom Cruise bromance. Never Mind that David Miscavige is probably screeching his Thetans off in anger over that “bromance” line, the tidbit that got the most attention from Simon’s interview is the part where Simon said that Tommy never ever apologizes. This is not news to any Scientology minion who has probably had to say, “You’re right, all-knowing Tom, the sky isn’t blue, you are six foot two without heels, and Shelly Miscavige is 100% fine.” But that nugget made Simon Pegg trend on Twitter, and because, I guess, Simon really doesn’t want to feel the wrath of the intergalactic Henery Hawk, he has popped up to say that it’s just a running joke between them, you idiots!

Simon spent a little time during his chat with The Times of London with his tongue up Tommy’s Scientolohole, like saying that movie stars are extinct except for THEE Tom Cruise. And you won’t ever see Tom dirty his lone movie star feet by stepping onto the peasant grounds of a TV show set.

Another time, in Casablanca, Pegg was in Cruise’s car. “We were surrounded by a fucking throng of these young Moroccan guys going, ‘Tom Cruise, Tom Cruise, Tom Cruise,’ and banging on the car. And I’m looking at Tom and he was fucking laughing his head off. I’d be so stressed out, but he’s very OK with it. He understands that’s the price for the level of movie star he is. He’s perhaps the only movie star left. Everyone else who comes near has probably done TV. I can guarantee you will never see Tom Cruise on a TV show. Because he’s about movies. Movies are his passion.”

Simon then went on to say that his best friend Tommy is a gaslighting master and doesn’t admit to making mistakes even when wrong. So it seems like the words “I’m sorry” leave Tommy’s mouth as often as the words “I’d like to visit my daughter Suri” do. Cult leaders gonna cult lead, I guess.

Are they friends? “Yeah,” he says. “We text. Whenever he texts me, I’ll go, ‘Whooo-ooh!’ to my wife.” He mimes waving the phone at his wife, Maureen, but she just eyerolls and calls him “your boyfriend”. Pegg has known Cruise for 16 years now and they’ve had deep conversations and heart-to-hearts. “The best thing he taught me is never to accept responsibility for a mistake,” he says. “But in a funny way. Like if something goes wrong and it’s his fault, he’ll flatly deny it. And then if someone corrects him, instead of saying sorry, he’ll just say, ‘Yeah,’ and wink at me. I admitted fucking up once and he said – with a wry smile, I hasten to add – ‘Simon, don’t do that.’ He maintains his authority by never being to blame for anything.”

Well, in 2006, Brooke Shields said that Tom Cruise gave her an in-person apology for saying that she should have not taken anti-depressants to treat her postpartum depression after the birth of her first child (and his rep confirmed that he “mended” his friendship with Brooke but his position on anti-depressants hasn’t changed). But that may have been the last apology on record that Tommy ever made! And when Simon’s comments about Tommy’s lack of accountability went viral, he got on Twitter to make it clear that it’s just a joke between them.

“Currently trending on Twitter for something I said in The Times interview about Tom Cruise never accepting responsibility for his mistakes, like it isn’t just a fucking running joke that we have. Stop being so fucking literal!”

So Simon shared an inside joke without totally saying it’s an inside joke and is now mad at everyone for not realizing it was an inside joke? Simon really has learned from Tom.

And while Simon Pegg won’t say a bad thing about Tom Cruise, noted anti-Scientology warrior Leah Remini gladly will. Leah is no stranger to dragging Tommy (see: here, here, here, and here) and she did it again. Tom Cruise is currently sitting at the top of the Hollywood sign thanks to Top Gun: Maverick getting praise and making tons of cash (it’s made $747 million at the worldwide box office so far). Former Scientologist Claire Headley wrote a Facebook post on why she won’t see Top Gun: Maverick and support the “scam of a man” that is Tom Cruise. Leah tweeted the post and co-signed Claire’s words.

It was also recently announced that Leah Remini is replacing Matthew Morrison as a judge on So You Think You Dance after Matthew was shit-canned for making a contestant uncomfortable with his DMs. Leah Remini judging a dance competition made zero sense to me until I realized that she’s been slam dancing on Tom Cruise’s neck for years.
